My Heart is Inditing
7:30 Sunday 14th April 2013
St Mary’s Church, Walton-on-Thames
My Heart is Inditing: an exploration of two Baroque masters and near-contemporaries.
Dietrich Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri (‘the limbs of our Jesus’) is one of the towering artistic achievements of the seventeenth century. In this set of meditations, a penitent kneels at the foot of the cross, gradually extending his gaze upwards to contemplate the seven parts of Christ’s crucified body.
Leaving this devotional introspection we enter the flamboyant surroundings of James II’s Westminster Abbey coronation. This occasion presented Henry Purcell with the opportunity to write on a lavish scale, and My Heart is Inditing is a majesterial outpouring of joy from the young Englishman. From the opening string symphony to the rich eight-part choral writing, this is music fit for a king.
