Ishirini presents two contrasting musical responses to human mortality.
Heinrich Schütz’s Musikalische Exequien (German Requiem) is subtitled ‘Concert in the form of a German burial mass’ and was written for his patron, who asked the composer to set the texts inscribed on the coffin that he had commissioned for himself. Schütz’s instinctive feel for vocal writing and his masterly setting of the text makes this one of the most moving works of the seventeenth century.
Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem is a distinctive mix of Gregorian plainsong and rich twentieth century French harmony. It is a powerful work that is one of the truly great settings of the mass for the dead.
