St John Passion
7.30pm Saturday 12th April 2014
St Mary's Church, Welwyn
Tickets: £12/£8/under 16s free
The swirling string writing and tortured clashes in the opening of Bach’s St John Passion create a dark foreboding atmosphere as the listener begins an intense journey through the final stages of Christ’s life. At its first performance in 1724 this work was unparalleled in its musical ambition, scale, and the personal nature of Bach’s response to the text. It remains one of the seminal works of Western art.
In this performance Ishirini is joined by period-instrument ensemble The Chamber Players Baroque, led by Alison Bury, which includes members of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Gabrieli Consort and English Baroque soloists.
Soloists Tom Kelly (Evangelist), Molly Alexander, Edward McMullan, Peter Harris and Samuel Mitchell come from the ranks of The Sixteen, Monteverdi Choir and Tenebrae.
