An Offering of Songs
Sun 27th February 2011
3pm St Mary's, Alverstoke
Singers from Cambridge launch their tour to India
Tickets: £5 in advance or £6 on the door (children free).
Our repertoire celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Rabindranath Tagore, arguably Bengal’s most famous son, a playwright, poet, song writer, novelist, educator, philosopher and humanist. An Offering of Songs is the meaning of Gitanjali, the name of his Nobel Prize-winning collection of poetry in English.
Our offering consists of words and music inspired by Tagore and his work. Tagore’s web of influences is such that we will be singing some of the most sublime choral music of the European tradition, with pieces by Finzi, Schumann, Macmillan and Skempton. The concert will also include the premiere of a new commission, out of the mouths of children, featuring the choristers of St. Mary's.
